Last fortnight, the two decided to weave their lives together in what papa Dhirubhai insisted was a "simple and tasteful" wedding in Bombay. Mukesh, the 27-year-old heir to the loom, came not on one of the garishly dressed nags hired out by wedding caterers in Bombay, but simply in a buggy drawn by six stallions. The guests at the dandiya ras function were allowed to take their beautifully painted ras sticks home, and the wedding card - embellished with Mughal prints - was quite a collector's item. As for the wedding reception, designed as a beautiful rural fair, a mere 5,000 people turned up. No, not a book shop but a grocery store - as his own unique way of saying that after years of putting his blood, sweat and<i>ashk </i>into literary work he is still unable to support his family and that it is warped government policies that are responsible for putting a creative spirit behind a humdrum ration counter. Ashk has in the past sold newspapers, handkerchieves and lemons. "I see no harm in it," he said, "I can sit on the road and sell things." If that manages to raise some literary hi-brows to action, very well. Last month, Banerjee was named Best Actor of 1984 at the D.W. Griffith awards ceremony in New York. "I was fortunate that David Lean went to India to search for an actor," he said modestly. Now that the world has discovered Banerjee, there's not a thing he can do wrong. He has been called the best thing about Satyajit Ray's<i>Ghare</i><i>Baire</i>and<i>USA Today </i>wrote that "Banerjee's acting is something to remember at Oscar time." She's not joining films yet, insists the first year history honours Lady Shri Ram student. In fact she plans to do nothing in the near future except study. Depressing stuff, but the novel<i>Oru Kaveriyai Pola</i>has earned for its authoress Tripurasundari - better known as<b>Lakshmi</b>- the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for 1984. Like in all her works there is a bit of Lakshmi in this story too. She lived in South Africa till her husband died and returned to India only in 1977. She didn't like what she saw: "The progress in Tamil literature," she laments, "is only in obscenity and not in ideology." Her own writing - praised for its realistic detail and strong narrative power - champions the cause of women.
