<p><strong>EDUCATION AND LAW & ORDER</strong></p><p>At a time when the national dropout rate among schoolchildren is increasing, West Bengal has achieved a significant fall in dropouts in 2019-20, from 3.3 per cent to 1.5 per cent. Since the Mamata Banerjee government assumed power in 2011, the state has added more than 187,000 classrooms to its school infrastructure. The number of schools itself has gone up by about 2,100 between 2015-16 and 2018-19.</p><p>Bengal now has 42 state-aided and private universities as against 12 in 2011. The state government has allocated 700 crore for higher education in 2020-21 and Rs 8,750 crore for primary, secondary and higher secondary education. Close to 2.1 million students applied for higher education in 2019-20, up from 1.32 million in 2011.</p><p>Better educational infrastructure alone did not help. The government encouraged school enrolments through free distribution of some 80 million school uniforms, 7.3 million school bags and 17 million pairs of school shoes in 2019-20. &ldquo;Almost all primary and secondary schools now provide mid-day meals, benefitting around 11.3 million students,&rdquo; says a state education official.</p><div class="itemcenter"><amp-iframe height="62" title="" width="320" sandbox="allow-forms allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-top-navigation allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation" allowfullscreen src="https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.dev?url=https%3A%2F%2Fakm-img-a-in.tosshub.com%2Fsites%2Findiatoday%2Fbanner%2Fpreferred-source-new.html%3Fv%3D1.014%5Cu0026native%3D1" class="mrBt15 preferred-source-banner"> </amp-iframe></div></p><p>Through the Covid pandemic, mid-day meal rations are being directly supplied to the families of students while &lsquo;Banglar Shiksha Dooravashe&rsquo;, a toll-free number connecting students with their teachers, has gained immense popularity.</p><p>During the lockdown, the Kolkata police played a commendable role, from ensuring compliance of norms to dropping groceries and medicines at the doorsteps of senior residents and Covid patients. They even crooned in neighbourhoods to keep public spirits high.</p><p>Law and order in Bengal has also shown marked improvement. Two regions that faced sporadic political and Maoist unrest in the past, the Hills and Jangalmahal, are now relatively peaceful. Forty-eight special women police stations have been added across the state. These cater to crimes against women and have more women personnel. Another 40 women police stations and 14 coastal, five cyber crime and 38 child-friendly police stations are being set up.
