<p><strong>GOVERNANCE</strong></p><p>Rajasthan, the largest state in the country by geographical area, has a low net state domestic product (NSDP), making it a challenge to govern. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, taking a leaf out of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi&rsquo;s book, had pushed for computerisation when he took over as CM for the first time in 1998. This helped the state build up its e-governance systems. Today, Rajasthan has 87,000 e-Mitra kiosks conducting over 600,000 transactions daily, even during the ongoing pandemic. &ldquo;Our effort is to make accessible as many services as quickly as possible. I hold district officers accountable if a person has to come to me or a minister in Jaipur with genuine grievances,&rdquo; says Gehlot.</p><p>Some of the remarkable actions that reflect the state&rsquo;s improved governance have been taken in the social sector. For instance, during the pandemic, medicines were distributed for free in OPDs. Such steps have helped the state keep Covid in check. Twenty people, including women and children, were left stranded 75 feet above the ground after an amusement ride malfunctioned at an exhibition held at Codissia Grounds in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore. The incident occurred on Tuesday night when around 20 visitors, including three children, were stuck on the ride, prompting police and the Fire and Rescue Department to respond. Using a sky lift vehicle, the rescue team worked for roughly 45 minutes to safely bring everyone down. The incident has raised safety concerns, following a similar case in Chennai last year where visitors were left stranded on an amusement ride, highlighting the need for periodic inspections and strict safety checks of such attractions.
