<p><strong>EDUCATION</strong></p><p>This year in June, Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu had a special reason to be happy. The central government, fulfilling one of his dreams, approved admission of girls in Class VI at the Sainik School East Siang for the academic session of 2021-22. Khandu has been a strong advocate of promoting education in the state, but, more importantly, his focus has been on spreading the benefits of education to every segment of the society, irrespective of gender. &ldquo;If we educate a girl, we educate the whole family. With right opportunity and access to education, a girl child can do wonders and help prevent gender inequality and violence against women,&rdquo; says the chief minister, who has also taken several measures to improve the overall quality of education in the state.</p><p>Instead of starting new schools, the focus has shifted to recruiting adequate number of subject teachers. In 2016, when he first came to power, Khandu had also initiated the &lsquo;Chief Minister&rsquo;s Award for Excellence in Quality Education; to recognise the performance of teachers in schools and encourage them to do better.
