Engineer. Bureaucrat. Activist. Politician. The Delhi chief minister has donned many hats.Born in Haryana’s Siwani on August 16, 1968. Father Gobind Ram Kejriwal was an electrical engineer.Joins IIT-Kharagpur in 1985 to study mechanical engineering, joins Tata Steel in 1989 and is posted in Jamshedpur. Resigns in 1992 and spends time doing social service with the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata, the Ramakrishna Mission in the Northeast and the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan.Joins the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) in 1995..preferred-source-banner{ margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom:10px;}In December 1999, while working in the income tax department, Kejriwal, along with Manish Sisodia, launches the NGO Parivartan to address citizens’ grievances related to the PDS, public works, social welfare schemes, income tax and electricity.In November 2000, takes a work sabbatical to focus on Parivartan.In 2001, the Delhi government enacts a state-level Right to Information (RTI) Act. Parivartan uses the RTI Act to help people get work done in government departments as well as expose scams.In February 2006, Kejriwal resigns as joint commissioner of income tax in New Delhi. Wins the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Emergent Leadership that year for his efforts to boost the RTI movement.In December 2006, establishes the Public Cause Research Foundation with the award money as seed fund.In 2010, Kejriwal launches a protest against alleged corruption in the Commonwealth Games.In 2011, joins activist Anna Hazare and others to set up the India Against Corruption (IAC) group, which demands a Jan Lokpal Bill. The campaign gets national media attention; Kejriwal is a leading face of the agitation.Formally launches the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in November 2012.AAP contests the 2013 Delhi assembly election, wins 28 seats and forms a minority government with support from the Congress.On February 14, 2014, quits as chief minister after failing to table the Jan Lokpal Bill in the assembly.In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, Kejriwal contests against the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi from Varanasi; loses by a huge margin. AAP wins four seats, all in Punjab.In April 2014, Kejriwal makes it to Time magazine’s global list of 100 most influential people.On May 21, 2014, Kejriwal is sent to jail after he refuses to furnish a bail bond of Rs 10,000 in a defamation case filed by BJP leader Nitin Gadkari.In February 2015, AAP registers a landslide win in the Delhi state poll, bags 67 of 70 seats.In February 2017, AAP contests assembly elections in Punjab and Goa.
