Advani<p>When independent Rajya Sabha member, businessman and Kanshi Ram's trouble-shooter Jayant Malhoutra declared on May 31, "Wait for a few days and Mulayam Singh Yadav will be out", it was seen as another empty boast. But the coup was already well on its way.<br><br>The final phase began on May 23. That night, Mulayam had called on Kanshi Ram in Lucknow to discuss alliance issues, but the BSP leader insisted that they speak in the presence of journalists, remarking: "<i>Charon koandheron ki zaroorat hoti hai</i>.<i>Main to roshni main baat karta hoon</i>" (It's thieves who need to talk in the dark. I discuss things in the open). Soon after, Mulayam left alone for an election tour which he and Kanshi Ram were to undertake together.<br><br>Later that night, Kanshi Ram went to the house of Lalji Tandon, the BJP's leader in the Vidhan Parishad, and informed him that they had decided to form the Government with BJP support. Ram and Malhoutra returned to Delhi on May 24 and met BJP Rajya Sabha member Sangh Priya Gautam. His assurance set the ball rolling, and Murli Manohar Joshi was authorised to talk to the BSP.</p><p>Malhoutra then sounded out contacts in other parties. On May 25, he reportedly arranged a meeting of Joshi, Atal Behari Vajpayee, Jitendra Prasada (the prime minister's political secretary) and Kanshi Ram. (While Prasada denies that the meeting took place, top leaders of other parties say it did). The BJP and Congress(I) gave their approval. Other parties like the Janata Dal and CPI were only told that the BSP would be withdrawing support.<br><br>On May 26, Kanshi Ram got himself admitted to Delhi's Escorts Heart Institute following mild heart trouble. The coup was now in place, almost a year after Gautam, a known Ambedkarite with old RSS links, had made the first public pro-BSP statement following problems between Kanshi Ram and Mulayam over a BSP minister. He had said: "We are willing to support the BSP provided Mayawati is the chief minister."<br><br>It was a shrewd statement. Mayawati was considered a "soft target" because of her "ambition". Gautam admits that he kept in touch with Kanshi Ram's trusted bureaucrats, BJP leader Govindacharya also maintained contact with Mayawati. Mulayam, on his part, played his cards badly. In the past 18 months, he alienated "natural" allies like the Janata Dal and the CPI and ignored warnings that Rao would dump him the moment his usefulness was over. </p><p>And that once N.D. Tiwari walked out of the Congress(I), Rao would have had no choice but to drop Mulayam to deprive Tiwari of his main, anti-Mulayam plank. By June 1 - when Mulayam supporter and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Dalmia requested Rao to allow the SP leader to prove his majority - the prime minister had made up his mind. Union Food Minister Ajit Singh's threat to resign if Mulayam was not dumped was the last straw. </p><p>Mulayam was told to resign or face dismissal.
