1994-2019: Story of the Ayodhya land dispute case

Built by Mir Baqi in 1528, on the orders of Mughal emperor Babur, the Babri Masjid in Ram's birthplace Ayodhya, is the most controversial and long-standing debate in the history of Independent India. A section of the Hindu community claimed that the Masjid was built by demolishing a structure that marked Lord Ram's birthplace. The controversy that began in 1949, after a Ram idol appeared inside the mosque, is going to come to a conclusion this week.

In 1994, two years after the demolition of the Babri Masjid, the Supreme Court heard Writ petitions challenging the Centre's move to acquire the disputed land following which, in 2002, the High Court began its hearing and the case has come a long way till now.
