PM Modi-Trump meet lays roadmap for trade, energy ties: Former US envoy

Former Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, described the meeting between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as significant. "The timing of the meeting is very significant. It is important that they met, and that has been reflected in the visit," he said.

A joint statement released after the meeting outlined discussions on investment, trade, energy, technology, innovation, and multilateral cooperation. "In each of these areas, there are clear deadlines," Sandhu said. "That is why it is certainly a step forward."

On the symbolism of the meeting, Sandhu pointed to PM Modi's stay at Blair House, a guest residence within the premises of the White House. "PM Modi stayed at the Blair House, and everyone knows the historical significance of this," he said.

PM Modi also met Tulsi Gabbard, Director of US National Intelligence. "PM and Tulsi Gabbard know each other very well. The acquaintance is a long one. She was a co-chair of the Senate India Caucus," Sandhu said. He recalled attending her wedding in Hawaii.

The meeting included an interaction with Elon Musk and his family. "The interaction with Elon Musk and his family also had a personal touch," he said.

On trade issues, Sandhu said tariffs had been imposed on several US allies. "It must be considered that the tariffs have also been put on a number of important allies to the US," he said. He pointed to the joint statement as a sign of progress. "There is a clear roadmap laid out there."
