Exclusive: Why was Hathras victim's body cremated forcefully, UP Police responds

According to an India Today ground report, a huge ruckus broke out over the cremation of Hathras gangrape victim's body. As the victim's body was being forcibly taken away for cremation without the family's permission, villagers came out to protest and had to lie in front of the ambulance to stop it. Despite repeated requests, the family was not allowed to take the body home for performing rituals or allowed to grieve properly. The family members kept begging the police officials but around 2.45 am on Wednesday, the Dalit woman's body was cremated.

The police officials reportedly locked the family members inside the house. Around 200 police officials stood outside the house with batons and sticks and barricaded the entire house. UP Police then forcibly took the victim's body to the cremation, around 100 meters from her native home, and forcibly burnt the body against the family's will. Not a single family member of the victim was present at the time of the cremation. When police officials were questioned by India Today that why wasn't the family permission taken for cremation, they evaded all questions and refused to give any answers.
