Death penalty cleared by Cabinet for rapists of children below age 12

After a huge public outcry, the cabinet has amended the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The proposal to amend the stringent POCSO Act to provide for death penalty as the maximum punishment in cases of rapes of children less than 12 years old has been approved.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is back from a five-day foreign trip, chaired a cabinet meeting to bring an ordinance or emergency executive order on rape.

Apart from death penalty for rapists of girls below 12 years of age, the cabinet order also puts in place a number of measures for speedy investigation and trial of rape cases.
