Battleground Northeast: Cliffhanger in Tripura, CPM-BJP neck and neck

Amid tight security, the counting of votes for the assembly polls that will decide the fate of these three north-eastern states is underway.

Though the strength of the assembly of the three states is 60-member each, voting was held for 59 constituencies in all three states for different reasons.

In Nagaland, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party's (NDPP) CM candidate Neiphiu Rio was declared elected unopposed from Northern Angami-II assembly seat.

The BJP has emerged as a strong contender in all three states. The ruling parties are facing big challenges from the saffron party.

Exit polls predicted that BJP would emerge as a strong contender in all three states and would dethrone the 25-year-old Left Front government in Tripura.

Congress has been ruling in Meghalaya for 10 years, while Naga People's Front (NPF) is in power in Nagaland since 2003, except for a 3-month period of Presidents rule in 2008.

Rohit Sharma Reports: Protester Alex Petty Shot Dead By Immigration Agents In Minneapolis

On this special report, Rohit Sharma provides details on the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Alex Petty by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis. Petty, a nurse and lawful gun owner, was killed during a protest against ongoing ICE operations, marking the second such death this month following the killing of Renee Goodlaw on January 7. Rohit Sharma notes that while agents claim Petty 'was presumed to be presenting a threat' because he was armed, video evidence suggests the weapon may have been seized before the fatal shots. The incident has sparked a political standoff between Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and the Department of Homeland Security over investigation rights. President Donald Trump continues to back the ICE agents, with reports suggesting he may invoke the Insurrection Act to deploy the military in Minnesota. Protests have turned violent as citizens demonstrate against the administration's aggressive deportation agenda and the perceived lack of accountability for federal agents involved in the shootings.
