Congress MP Karti Chidambaram criticised the India‑US trade agreement, saying while India and the US are both major economies that need each other, US President Trump’s stance has been inconsistent: from calling the Indian economy “dead” to now seeking close trade ties. He questioned the conditions attached to the tariff cut to 18%, particularly restrictions on India’s oil purchases from Russia and Iran and the push to buy US or Venezuelan oil.
Chidambaram also challenged the feasibility of India buying large volumes of American goods and said it was premature to judge the pact based on Trump’s social media posts, given the US leader’s history of impulsive statements.
