Delhi man falls to death in open Jal Board pit, body found after overnight search
A young man from Delhi's Rohini went missing during his return home, leading to a frantic overnight search by his family and police. Tragically, he was found dead in an uncovered water board pothole in Janakpuri.

The night stretched endlessly for Kamal’s family. Every unanswered call, every silent phone line, sent waves of panic through his home in Delhi's Kailashpuri. Kamal, a young man returning from his office in Rohini, had vanished without a trace.
By midnight, his family was on the streets, tracing every possible route, their hearts pounding with fear. They went from Janakpuri to Sagar Pur, Vikas Puri, and Rohini police stations, begging for help, hoping someone had seen him.
The police, too, scoured the area through the night alongside the family. Sources said, “We were searching with the family the entire night. We had the tower location from his phone, but it took time to narrow it down to the exact spot. Claims that the police did nothing are incorrect.”
TRAGIC DISCOVERY AT DAWN
It was only around 7:30 in the morning that the nightmare ended, but not in the way anyone hoped. Kamal was found in an open water board pothole in Janakpuri, his bike toppled beside him.
The scene left his family shattered, confronting a grief no one should face.
Initial investigations indicate that Kamal’s death was caused by the fall. Police are now examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to reconstruct the final moments leading to the tragedy.
ALLEGATIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITY
The family has accused authorities of negligence, questioning how such a dangerous pit was left uncovered on a busy road. They claim that if prompt action had been taken, Kamal might have survived. “It could have been an accident, but we cannot rule out foul play. Someone might have pushed him into the pit,” a relative said.
The tragedy has also sparked outrage on social media.
The Aam Aadmi Party tweeted, “At home, the mother must be waiting for her son to return How would that innocent mother know that an incompetent government has swallowed her son? In Janakpuri, a son lost his life after falling into this pothole on the road. The system had already died at the hands of BJP.”
AAP councillor Raminder Kaur, Ward 100, was quoted by PTI as saying, “I came to know about this in the morning. When I saw the photographs, I felt very sad that a young man fell into a pit dug during work being carried out by the PWD. There were no barricades, no protective fencing, and the area was very dark, which led to the accident. This work has been ongoing for the past eight months, and roads are being excavated without proper solutions, causing repeated accidents.
Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. CCTV footage and other evidence are being scrutinised to determine exactly how the accident occurred, while Kamal’s family demands accountability from the authorities responsible for road and water board maintenance.
Meanwhile, Delhi Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood has ordered an official probe into the incident to determine accountability and ensure such accidents do not recur.
The Delhi Jal Board has also expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to Kamal’s family.
In an official statement, the board said a committee has been constituted to investigate the incident, and strict action will be taken if negligence is found at any level. The DJB also said that regular inspections of safety arrangements at all workplaces are ongoing and urged citizens to report any unsafe sites on the toll-free number 1916.
