Chhattisgarh government suspends DSP Kalpana Verma over alleged financial misconduct

The Chhattisgarh government on Thursday suspended DSP Kalpana Verma with immediate effect. She is currently posted in Dantewada district. The Home (Police) Department issued the order following a preliminary inquiry that found serious allegations against her.

According to the suspension order, the initial investigation revealed contradictions in financial transactions, inconsistencies in statements recorded during the probe, and WhatsApp chats linked to the case. The inquiry pointed to misuse of official position, illegal financial gains and accumulation of disproportionate assets, in violation of the Chhattisgarh Civil Services Conduct Rules, 1965.

During the suspension period, Verma’s headquarters will be at the Police Headquarters in Nava Raipur. She will be entitled to a subsistence allowance as per rules.

The suspension follows an investigation into a dispute involving Verma and Raipur-based businessman Deepak Tandon. Acting on government directions, an Additional SP-level inquiry was conducted, resulting in a detailed report of about 1,475 pages that was submitted to the authorities. The report reportedly contains several serious findings.

Sources said the investigation uncovered WhatsApp chats between the DSP and the businessman in which sensitive and confidential police-related information was allegedly shared. Officials are treating this as a serious breach involving the leakage of intelligence information.

Earlier, Tandon had accused Verma of extorting around 2.5 crore from him since 2021 through an alleged “love trap.” The allegations include about 2 crore in cash, a luxury car, a diamond ring worth 12 lakh, gold jewellery worth 5 lakh and other expensive gifts. He also claimed that despite repeated complaints, the car and jewellery have not been returned.

The businessman further alleged that large sums were taken in the name of opening a hotel under the DSP’s brother’s name and has demanded a separate investigation into the matter.

Following the inquiry’s findings, the state government initiated disciplinary action by suspending DSP Kalpana Verma.
