Toyota to recall 8,700 Corolla Altis and Camrys in India

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) on Wednesday said it was recalling select models of its Corolla Altis and Camry cars to inspect the power window master switch (PWMS), a Delhi report said.

Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 7.43 million vehicles in the US, Japan, Europe and elsewhere around the world for a faulty power-window switch - the latest, massive quality woes for Japan's top automaker. The recall, announced on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 affects more than a dozen models produced from 2005 through 2010.

TKM said that as part of a global initiative it will recall Corolla Altis manufactured between July 30, 2008 and Dec 31, 2008 and Camry made between September 1, 2006 and July 1, 2008 on a voluntary basis.

Toyota Motor Corp. said on Tuesday, October 9, that sales of new vehicles in China dropped 48.9 per cent in September from a year earlier to 44,100 vehicles. Honda Motor Co. said September sales plunged 40.5 per cent to 33,931 vehicles. China sales for Nissan Motor Co. slid 35.3 per cent last month to 76,100 vehicles.

"TKM will recall 8,700 vehicles in India to inspect the PWMS. On certain Corolla Altis and Camry models of the specified years, the PWMS may begin to feel notchy or become inoperative," the company said in a statement.

"This can be due to wear and tear over-time, of specific contact points in the PWMS. Owners of the involved vehicles, covered under this Recall Campaign, will receive a notification by letter/call from Toyota."

The company further said that the recall campaign will be conducted from November onwards, across all authorized dealers.

The dealers, according to the company, will inspect and, if need be, replace the PWMS at no charge to the vehicle owner.

"The repair is expected to take approximately one hour, depending on the dealer's work schedule," the statement added. Earlier, as part of company policy, the Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) had globally announced this voluntary recall.
