Air India Express aircraft from Dubai, carrying 166 passengers, overshot the runaway while landing at the Mangalore airport on Saturday, May 22, 2010.

Flight IX-892 that crashed in Mangalore was operated by a Boeing 737-800 and had 4 infants and 6 crew members on board.

The aircraft overshot the Mangalore airport runway, hit the fence and went beyond the boundary wall of the airport.

Aviation sources termed the Air India Express crash as an 'accident' instead of 'incident'. In aviation parlance an accident denotes casualties.

The Dubai-Mangalore flight crashed at around 6.30 am on May 22, 2010.

PM condoled the loss of lives in the Air India Express flight crash in Mangalore and announced a financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of those killed.

PM has also announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 each to those injured in the crash from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the families of those killed.

The plane had partially broken up with smoke billowing from the main fuselage. Preliminary reports suggested that the aircraft exploded after it caught fire.

The entire area around Kenjar village near the crash site and the airport has been cordoned off.

An eyewitness said the bodies of passengers were strewn everywhere near Kenjar Gudda, a hillock.
