25 years of Maine Pyar Kiya: Lesser known facts about the film

It's been 25 years since the romantic saga hit the screens in 1989 but this boy-girl romance is still a hit with the people who grew up in 80s and 90s. We might remember most of the dialogues and songs, but there are a few things that you may not know about the film.

Salman Khan was the not the first choice for Maine Pyar Kiya. Deepak Tijori and Vindoo Dara Singh were considered for the lead role.

The film won six Filmfare Awards including best picture, best music director, best playback singer (male). The film held the record of winning maximum Filmfare Awards until DDLJ won 10 in 1995.

Salman Khan and Monish Behl auditioned for the film together. While Salman bagged the lead role, Monish was seen in a negative role in Maine Pyar Kiya.

Maine Pyar Kiya became so popular that the merchandise and props used in the film went up for sale. It was the first Bollywood film to do so. 

Shabina Dutt, a model, auditioned for the lead role (female) but she failed the screen test. But she was the one who referred Salman's name for the lead role. The two had worked in a TV advertisement together.

Bhagyashree got the outstanding face of the year Filmfare award but the actress was seen along with Ashutosh Gowariker in TV series Kachchi Dhoop.

Maine Pyar Kiya had also been dubbed in Spanish as Te Amo, the first experiment of its kind. This 125 minute film also proved its universal appeal with a glorious 10 week premiere run at Lima, Peru.

Pervin Dastur, who played the vamp Seema in Maine Pyar Kiya, was picked from the Mumbai theatre scene.

Sooraj Barjatya was influenced by Hollywood film Top Gun and he designed the jacket for Salman Khan in Maine Pyar Kia on the same lines.

It took director Sooraj Barjatya three months to finalise the antakshri song in Maine Pyar Kiya.
