Reimagining workspaces: Enhancing women's safety and leadership role

At the India Today Mumbai Conclave, a powerful panel featuring Meeran Chadha Borwankar, former Commissioner of Police Pune; Prabha Chandra, Senior Professor of Psychiatry; Mihira Sood, Supreme Court Lawyer; and Rituparna Chakraborty, Co-Founder of TeamLease, addressed the urgent issue of women's safety in the workplace and the necessity for increased female representation in leadership roles.

The discussion highlighted alarming statistics: only 25% of women participate in the workforce, and just 12 percent of police personnel are women, underscoring the critical need for more women in leadership positions within law enforcement to advocate for women's rights effectively. 

Moreover, many women leave the workforce after five years, particularly at mid-management levels, which not only stifles their professional growth but also perpetuates a lack of awareness amongst leaders regarding the challenges faced by their colleagues.

The panellists emphasised the importance of involving men in conversation, as many may not grasp the impact of their words and actions due to ingrained cultural norms. They advocated affirmative action as a fundamental right rather than a charitable act.

The need for organisations to foster safer workplaces was also highlighted, with suggestions for creating flatter structures to mitigate power imbalances and prevent harassment. In conclusion, the panel asserted that achieving gender equity is a collective responsibility that demands immediate action and sustained commitment from all stakeholders, particularly those in privileged positions. The discussion reinforced the urgency of uplifting women’s voices and ensuring their safety in the workplace.
