Which IIMs accept lower CAT scores?
No, Indian Institute of Management officially admits candidates on the basis of a “low” CAT score, as all IIMs follow defined minimum percentile cut-offs for shortlisting.
That said, some of the newer IIMs such as IIM Sambalpur, IIM Amritsar, and IIM Bodh Gaya—generally have comparatively lower CAT percentile thresholds than older, more established institutes like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, or IIM Calcutta.
It is also important to note that CAT performance is only one part of the selection process. Factors such as academic background, work experience, gender and academic diversity, and performance in the Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) play a significant role in final admissions.
CAT 2025 Result Live: Is work experience needed?
No, prior work experience is not a mandatory requirement for admission to the flagship MBA (PGP) programmes at Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) through CAT 2025. Fresh graduates and candidates with zero professional experience are eligible to apply and have been regularly admitted to these programmes.
However, while not compulsory, having work experience can be beneficial in the IIM selection process. Many IIMs include work experience as one of the factors in shortlisting candidates and in calculating composite scores for final admission decisions. The weight given to experience varies by institute — some award additional points for longer or higher-quality professional engagement, but this does not replace the core CAT score and academic requirements.

CAT Results 2025: How is CAT percentile worked out?
In the CAT exam, the percentile reflects a candidate’s performance in comparison to all test-takers. The calculation follows a multi-step process:
To begin with, raw scores are computed as per the marking scheme—each correct answer carries three marks, while one mark is deducted for every incorrect response. No negative marking applies to non-MCQ questions.
These raw scores, both overall and section-wise, are then normalised to account for variations across exam slots, resulting in scaled scores.
Finally, the scaled scores are converted into percentiles, which indicate a candidate’s relative standing and are displayed on the CAT scorecard.
