There is difference between freedom to criticise and inciting violence: Mahua Moitra

Speaking her mind on the Nupur Sharma case, TMC MP Mahua Moitra on Tuesday stated that what the BJP's fringe spokesperson, Mahua Moitra, said is at odds with the law of the land.

She was speaking at the fifth edition of the India Today Conclave East 2022 that began in Kolkata on Monday, July 4.

Referring to the case, Moitra said that she was a believer in the freedom to criticise. But there is a very strong line between freedom to criticise and freedom to incite violence.

Comparing the statement made by Nupur Sharma and the case against Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair, TMC MP Mahua Moitra pointed out that the alleged objectionable tweet that Zubair had posted in 2018 was the poster of a 1983 film called Kisi Se Na Kehna. Since being posted, the tweet had not incited violence or riots. She also pointed out that the case against him was registered after a Twitter account with one follower, and has since been disabled, raised a complaint, and the police took suo moto cognisance of it. "How are the two cases equitable?" she questioned.
