Taliban blitz continues, insurgents capture second-largest city Kandahar

The Taliban has captured Kandahar, Afghanistan's second-largest city and the 12th provincial capital to fall to the insurgents in a weeklong blitz. While Kabul itself isn’t directly under threat yet, but with security rapidly deteriorating, the United States plans to send in 3,000 troops to help evacuate some personnel from the US Embassy in the Afghan capital.
