Jeffrey Epstein’s final days in federal custody shed light on a little-known figure who remained close to him as his legal world collapsed: Karyna Shuliak, a Belarusian dentist described in newly released Epstein files as his longtime girlfriend and a central presence in his private life, The Telegraph reported.

According to the records, Epstein’s last phone call before his death in August 2019 was to Shuliak.

While many former friends and associates distanced themselves after his arrest on sex-trafficking charges, she continued to communicate with him as he awaited trial, underscoring the depth and durability of their relationship.

HOW EPSTEIN-SHULIAK GOT CLOSER

Karyna Shuliak, now 36, first met Epstein in 2010 in Minsk, Belarus, the report said. She was 20 at the time and was introduced to the disgraced American financier by a Russian woman known to both.

The files indicate that Epstein quickly became invested in her, drawing her into his inner circle and later helping facilitate her move to the US.

Over time, she emerged as one of the most significant people in his personal life and, ultimately, the primary beneficiary of his estate, which has been estimated at up to USD 100 million.

Documents describe the relationship as intimate but unequal, marked by dependence, emotional volatility, and control.

Epstein referred to Shuliak as his girlfriend and at times as his fiance.

Among the items he left to her was a 33-carat diamond ring, described in estate records as being “flanked by baguette-cut diamonds mounted in platinum,” which Epstein himself characterised as an engagement band.

The correspondence revealed in the files paints a complicated picture of Shuliak’s feelings toward Epstein, particularly in light of his criminal history.

In 2012, years after Epstein’s 2008 Florida conviction for procuring a child for prostitution, Shuliak wrote to him, “You are the purest man out of all men.”

The message highlights what investigators and observers see as a striking mix of devotion, denial, and emotional attachment.

EARLY RELATIONSHIP

At the same time, the early stages of their relationship show hesitation.

In one message, Shuliak declined Epstein’s offer of assistance, explaining she had "some views which strongly stay in my mind, no matter how stupid it may look".

Epstein forwarded that note to the woman who introduced them, adding, "Guess she read the press," a reference to public reporting about his past.

Despite initial reluctance, Shuliak eventually entered the US, officially listed as working as Epstein’s maid.

She later enrolled at Columbia University’s College of Dental Medicine and graduated in 2015.

The files indicate Epstein played an active role in advancing her education, making donations and arranging meetings with senior university figures.

Her academic background also included studies at Belarusian State Medical University before relocating to New York.

TOPSY-TURVY STATE OF AFFAIRS

Their private communications, however, reveal frequent conflict. Epstein complained in one email about “not enough kisses, not enough time, not enough sex," prompting Shuliak to respond that he had "absolutely ruined" her day.

In another exchange, Epstein minimised her stress by writing, "ou are in dental school, not the front lines in a war where people are dying".

Shuliak replied, “Each minute I am struggling to not cry,” and elsewhere expressed frustration that “for the whole week we didn’t have sex.”

Jealousy was another recurring theme. Epstein warned her early on, "Your concern over women is unnecessary. The first day we became together, I told you please. There are always women around. If they will make you jealous or anxious, it will be a problem".

The remark aligns with broader allegations in the Epstein case about his constant proximity to young women.

PERSONAL-PROFESSIONAL WORLD CONFLICT

Photographs included in the released materials show Shuliak travelling with Epstein on his private jet and attending meetings alongside him, including encounters with prominent academics such as Noam Chomsky.

In 2016, Epstein even contacted an aide connected to Andrew Mountbatten Windsor to ensure Shuliak and a friend were looked after during a London trip, writing, “I appreciate what you have planned thnx.” The aide replied, “My pleasure. I am always on your team!!”

The files also note that Epstein installed dental chairs in at least two of his properties, symbolising how closely Shuliak’s professional training and his personal world overlapped.

Taken together, the Epstein files portray Karyna Shuliak as a beneficiary of Epstein’s wealth and influence, but also as someone entangled in a relationship defined by imbalance, emotional strain, and the gravity of Epstein’s crimes.

As new records continue to emerge, her role offers further insight into the private dynamics surrounding one of the most scrutinised figures of recent decades.
