German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed US President Donald Trump’s shift on Greenland and urged Europeans not to hastily dismiss the transatlantic partnership. “We Europeans, we Germans, understand the value of the trust on which NATO is built,” Merz said during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“In a world of great powers, the United States also relies on this trust. It is both their, and our, key competitive advantage,” he added. “Despite the frustration and anger of recent months, we should not be too quick to write off the transatlantic partnership,” Merz concluded.

Zelenskyy is travelling to Davos for a meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, his adviser said on Thursday. 

Earlier this week, Zelenskyy said he would skip the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, choosing to stay in Kyiv to address the country’s energy crisis after Russian airstrikes damaged electricity infrastructure, leaving large parts of the capital and other regions without power. Zelenskyy added that he would only consider travelling to Davos if there was a chance to sign an agreement with Trump to resolve the nearly four-year conflict, including security guarantees and post-war reconstruction funding for Ukraine.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on his official X account that he is pleased with the progress made in strengthening Arctic security through joint NATO action, adding that Canada, together with its NATO allies including the Nordic-Baltic eight, will fully participate in defending the region and enhancing the alliance’s northern and western flanks.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte did not offer any compromise on Greenland’s sovereignty during his discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, NATO spokesperson Allison Hart said on Thursday. Hart said that “the Secretary General did not propose any compromise to sovereignty” during the meeting in Davos but did not provide further details.

“We have fantastic relationship with Egypt, relationship has been very strong way from the beginning,” US President Donald Trump said during pull-aside meeting with President of Egypt.

Trump took a jab at French President Emmanuel Macron during the World Economic Forum in Davos, mocking the sunglasses Macron had worn the previous day and questioning his stance on pharmaceutical pricing. Referring to Macron’s appearance, Trump said, “I watched him yesterday with those beautiful sunglasses — what the hell happened? But I watched him sort of be tough” regarding France’s reluctance to raise drug prices closer to US levels.

Trump accused France of benefiting from lower medicine costs at America’s expense and said he had confronted Macron directly, adding, “Emmanuel, you’ve been taking advantage of the United States for 30 years with prescription drugs. You really should do it, and you will do it.”

Trump’s decision to rule out military action to acquire Greenland marked the end of weeks of policy turbulence, during which senior aides worked to manage both the president’s demands and the alarm they had caused among US allies, according to two sources familiar with the discussions. White House officials had advocated a less confrontational approach, with several senior aides reportedly opposed to the idea of using force to take the Danish territory, the sources said. 

Swedish Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch said on Wednesday that despite US President Donald Trump pausing his threatened tariffs on European allies, relations with NATO remain unsettled. “We’re not out of the woods,” Busch told CNN, adding that recent weeks have been damaging for ties between Europe and the US.

She warned that it is too early to assess Trump’s proposed framework deal on Greenland, saying, “Today’s progress might be tomorrow’s headache.” Busch also criticised Trump for sending mixed signals to European allies, creating tension, and urged the administration to “come to your senses and calm down.”

Noting that Trump “does not answer well to weakness,” she praised Europe for standing firm and said the crisis has helped forge a sense of European determination.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated on Wednesday that the topic of Greenland's status with Denmark was not discussed during his talks with US President Donald Trump. Rutte added that Trump had backed away from his earlier threats of imposing tariffs and ruled out the use of military force to take control of Greenland. Rutte made these remarks in an interview on Fox News' Special Report with Bret Baier.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) was evacuated after an "unusual odor" caused attendees to cough. A White House official confirmed that the evacuation did not involve President Donald Trump, who had spoken earlier in the day and left about an hour before the smell was noticed, according to Daily Mail. The Davos Congressional Center, the primary venue for the conference where Trump criticised European leaders and outlined a deal to acquire Greenland, was fully evacuated as a precaution.

The White House said on Wednesday that key elements of the Greenland framework announced earlier by Donald Trump are still being worked out and will be made public only after all parties complete the process.

Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the agreement must first be finalised “by all parties involved” before details are released. She said Trump was optimistic the deal would go ahead, adding that it would allow the United States to secure its strategic objectives in Greenland at minimal cost.

Leavitt also praised Trump’s role in the negotiations, saying further information would be shared once discussions are complete and the framework is formally agreed.

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said Wednesday that tensions over Greenland had eased after Donald Trump ruled out the use of force and paused planned tariffs on Europe.

“The day is ending on a better note than it began,” Rasmussen said, welcoming what he described as a shift towards dialogue. He said Denmark was ready to engage with Washington to address US security concerns in the Arctic, while making clear that Copenhagen’s red lines over Greenland’s status would be respected.

A Greenland lawmaker has pushed back against suggestions that NATO could negotiate over the territory without its consent, saying the alliance has no mandate to speak on behalf of Greenlanders. 

Responding to remarks by Donald Trump about a deal with NATO chief Mark Rutte, Aaja Chemnitz said such claims were unacceptable and insisted that decisions about Greenland — including its natural resources — cannot be made without the involvement of its elected leaders.

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed Donald Trump’s decision to suspend tariffs that were due to take effect on 1 February against eight European countries, saying dialogue among allies must continue. Writing on X, Meloni said Italy had consistently argued that maintaining engagement between partner nations was essential.

NATO Chief Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Wednesday that the question of whether Greenland would remain under Danish control did not come up during his talks with Donald Trump.

Speaking to Fox News, Rutte said the issue was not raised in their conversation, which came hours after Trump backed away from threats to impose tariffs as leverage over Greenland, ruled out the use of force and said a deal was in sight to defuse the dispute over the Danish territory.

Ukraine’s chief negotiator Rustem Umerov said on Wednesday that he held talks with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Writing on Telegram, Umerov said the discussions focused on security guarantees for Ukraine and plans for post-war reconstruction. He added that the Ukrainian delegation also met representatives from BlackRock, which is involved in efforts linked to Ukraine’s rebuilding plans.

The United States could gain control over limited parts of Greenland under a proposed framework discussed in Davos that would expand American military access without transferring full sovereignty, according to reports from The Telegraph and New York Times.

Under the draft plan, areas hosting US military bases would be treated as American sovereign zones, similar to Britain’s long-standing base arrangement in Cyprus. The framework, discussed between US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, is intended to ease Danish concerns that Washington is seeking to annex the semi-autonomous territory, as per the reports.

The arrangement would allow the US to carry out military operations, intelligence activities and training.

US stocks ended higher on Wednesday after news of a framework deal on Greenland eased concerns about fresh US tariffs on European allies, lifting investor sentiment. 

Markets were already trading in positive territory but extended gains after the announcement, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 1.21%, the S&P 500 rising 1.16% and the Nasdaq Composite adding 1.18%, according to preliminary data.
 

Germany’s finance minister said it was too early to draw conclusions about Donald Trump’s proposed Greenland deal, urging restraint and warning against raising expectations prematurely.

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said that he welcomed Donald Trump’s decision to abandon plans to impose tariffs linked to Greenland, easing tensions between the United States and Europe.

NATO said that its members would act collectively to safeguard Arctic security, with discussions focusing on joint efforts by the alliance’s seven Arctic nations. A NATO spokesperson said talks would centre on preventing rivals from gaining influence in the region, adding that negotiations involving Denmark, Greenland and the United States would aim to ensure Russia and China never establish an economic or military foothold there.

The statement came after weeks of escalating rhetoric that strained transatlantic ties, before Donald Trump abruptly backed away from tariff threats linked to Greenland and signalled that a deal to defuse the dispute was within reach.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Donald Trump’s push to acquire Greenland does not concern Moscow, describing it as a matter for Washington and Copenhagen to resolve. Speaking at a Security Council meeting, Putin pointed to past US land purchases, including Alaska, and said the United States could easily afford Greenland if it chose to pursue a deal. He added that Denmark had long treated Greenland like a colony, but insisted the issue had no bearing on Russia.

Canadian PM Mark Carney held talks on Wednesday with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, agreeing on the need to accelerate investment along the alliance’s northwestern flank, his office said.

Carney told Rutte that Canada plans to sharply increase defence spending over the next decade, with a focus on strengthening Arctic sovereignty. The meeting took place shortly before Rutte met Donald Trump, who later said he had reached a framework agreement with NATO on Arctic security.

Speaking in Davos a day earlier, Carney warned that middle powers should stop assuming the rules-based order still holds and instead act collectively in the face of pressure from major powers.

Trump said he appreciated the reassurance, but stopped short of fully endorsing it.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar said on X that eight Arab and Islamic countries have agreed to join a proposed Peace Council after welcoming an invitation from US President Donald Trump. In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of United Arab Emirates, Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Qatar said they would sign the required documents under their domestic procedures, noting that Egypt, Pakistan and the UAE have already announced their participation. 

The ministers reaffirmed support for Trump-led peace efforts and said the council would work as a transitional administration to help secure a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, support reconstruction and advance a just and lasting peace based on Palestinian self-determination and statehood in line with international law, under a plan endorsed by the United Nations Security Council.

A senior White House official has signalled that US President Donald Trump’s address at the World Economic Forum in Davos will centre on his “America First” policy, emphasising strong domestic economic priorities while also touching on contentious foreign policy issues, including Greenland and Venezuela. Trump arrived in Switzerland amid heightened geopolitical tensions, with his controversial push to acquire Greenland from Denmark dominating international headlines and drawing criticism from European allies.

Trump reached Zurich after he boarded a different aircraft when Air Force One was forced to turn back due to a “minor electrical issue” while en route to Davos for the WEF.

Actor Chiranjeevi attended the WEF being held at Davos, sources close to the former union minister said on Wednesday.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, who is currently in Davos, came to know that the megastar was in Zurich, and extended a warm invitation to attend the summit, they said.

"Accepting the invitation with respect, Chiranjeevi attended the forum alongside the chief minister and witnessed the unveiling and presentation of the "Telangana Rising 2047" Vision Document at the global platform. The moment stood as a proud representation of Telangana’s progressive vision and cultural prominence on an international stage," they said.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy proposed to host a follow-up meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) every July in Hyderabad in India. The proposal received unanimous support from global business leaders and policy makers, during the 'Join The Rise' event held in Davos.

Stating that one year is a very long time for follow-ups in modern business cycles and making investment decisions, the Chief Minister proposed to the WEF to organise another follow-up forum every year – in July or August – in Hyderabad. "I request to join me in making this happen – to bring a July WEF Forum to Hyderabad."

He added that the recent Telangana Rising Global Summit was very successful, attracting investments worth over Rs 5.75 lakh crore. "Normally, we come to Davos to sign MoUs, but this year, after Global Business Summit success, we are now focusing on presenting our vision and policies."

Trump, who marked the end of a turbulent first year in office on Tuesday, is expected to overshadow the annual World Economic Forum (WEF)meeting in the Swiss mountain resort, where global elites chew over economic and political trends.

According to Reuters, Trump told a news conference on Tuesday that he would have meetings about the Danish territory of Greenland in Davos and was optimistic that an agreement could eventually be reached.
