Uphaar cinema tragedy: Owner Gopal Ansal gets 1 year in jail

Twenty years after a massive fire killed 59 people inside New Delhi's Uphaar theatre, the Supreme Court on Thursday sent one of the Ansal brothers, real estate baron Gopal, to a year in jail.

Partially reviewing its order for the June 13, 1997 tragedy, the apex court's three-judge bench refused to incarcerate Gopal's brother, Sushil Ansal, taking his age into account.

The Supreme Court, by a majority verdict of 2:1, ordered Gopal Ansal to surrender within four weeks to serve the remaining jail term. He has already served six months, and will now serve six more.
