Australian Open 2026, Day 2 Highlights: Novak Djokovic completes century in Melbourne, Iga Swaitek progresses

Novak Djokovic has a nice on-court interview after his 100th win at Australian Open. It was his 21st appearance at the season's first Grand Slam tournament. 

"Absolutely, I remember it very well. I also remember that in 2005 — not 2008 — I dyed my hair for the first and only time in my life just before playing Marat. Of course, after the match, which was a blowout in his favour, the first call I received was from my mother. She asked me, 'What are you thinking? Why did you colour your hair?' It was a unique experience," he said. 

"Looking back now, of course, some of the longest and best finals I’ve ever played were here, especially against my greatest rival, Rafa Nadal," he added. 

"A: I wish I could bring that body back, to be honest. Not for the beach or the looks, but for the functionality on the court. It served me well. I’m happy with my body so far, even though things are obviously different 15 years later."

A straight-set win over Pedro Martinez, the World No. 71, to move into the second round. 

A terrific serving display from the 10-time champion, who became the first man in history to win 100 matches at three different Grand Slams.

12th seed Casper Ruud storms into the second round. He defeats Mattia Bellucci of italy 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

Another clinical show from Novak Djokovic. World No. 71 Pedro Martinez has not managed to trouble him at all.

Can the Serb get this done in straight sets? It would be a good return to the Grand Slams for him.

The Frenchman defeated 17th seed Lehecka in straight sets to progress to the men's singles second round. 

Arthur will face former champion Stan Wawrinka, who is featuring in his final Australian Open campaign.

A near-spotless effort from the Serb, who got 89 percentage first serve wins. He was also 80 percent on second serve, which made all the difference in the oepning set. 

Djokovic's forehands have been decisive so far. 

Martinez's lack of pace and lack of depth is not doing him any good. Djokovic is enjoying the balls that are sitting up, begging to be hit. 

This is the 81st Grand Slam appearance for the 24-time champion.

Only two men – Roger Federer and Feliciano Lopez, have played as many in singles history. 

That's a piece of history for the Serb as he stepped onto the Rod Laver Arena for his first-round match.

So far, Djokovic has held serve twice and broken Martinez once for a 3-0 lead in the first set.

After stuttering in the first set, Mirra Andreeva produced a sensational comeback to win the next two and book her place in the second round of the Australian Open.

Iga Swiatek had to dig deep but she does enough to over Yue Yuan in the first round of the Australian Open. Having not made past the semi-final in Melbourne, this will be a great chance for her to go all the way to the final and secure that elusive title. Yuan can be proud of this effort here as she pushed the former World No.1 all the way in both sets. She is going to be one name that you're going to hear a lot in the coming years. 

Score: Swiatek wins 7-6, 6-3

This has been an incredible show of steel from Yuan against Swiatek. While the Polish star continues to lead 4-3 in the second set, the Chinese ace is not ready to back down and wins her third game to cut the gap down to one point. 

Mirra Andreeva, the eight seed, dropped the opening set against experienced Dona Vekic. But, she bounced back to win the second set 6-3. 

The momentum is with Mirra. Can she avoid an early upset here? 

Iga Swiatek has made a roaring comeback in the second set after being two breaks down. The world number two was pushed to a corner by Yue Yuan but fought her way back into the match and eventually emerged victorious in the tie-breaker.

Iga Swiatek has been put in a precarious situation, having been broken twice in her first round fixture. The World number 2 has been pushed to a corner by her Chinese rival and will have to script a comeback to stay alive.

The World number two Iga Swiatek is off to a poor start in her first round fixture against China's Yue Yuan, being a break down early in the match. However, two-time semi finalist at Melbourne is slowly coming into rhythm, living up to the lofty standards she sets for herself.

World No. 2 Iga Swiatek has begun her campaign against qualifier Yue Yuan of China inat Rod Laver Arena. Can the Polish star make light work of Yuan?

Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva, the eighth seed, is in action against Donna Vekic at Margaret Court Arena. 

Stan Wawrinka beats Laslo Djere in four sets, much to the crowd's delight.

The 40-year-old, who announced this will be his last Australian Open, is a crowd favourite here.

Even in his farewell Australian Open, the Swiss star is trying to be competitive. 

"Today was amazing. So special for me to enter the court at a grand slam. There’s a reason we practice hard with my team there every day, to have a chance to compete with the best players in the world. I don’t want to say too much, but guys it’s been amazing that you keep going. I’m so happy I won. I have a chance to play one more here. Like you said it’s my last time. I’m trying to enjoy. But I’m trying to win and compete. I’m a competitor. I’m always going to fight. Hopefully I’m gonna play another good match," he said. 

Alexandra Eala has lost in the women's singles opening round. Not the ideal start to the season for the young Filipino.

Despite taking the first set 6-0, Eala's main draw debut ended in defeat to America’s Alycia Parks 6-0, 3-6, 2-6. 

40-year-old Stan Wawrinka, is battling hard against Serbia's Laslo Djere. After losing the opening set 6-7, Wawrinka has bounced back to win the second set 6-3.

The 40-year-old former champion is not willing to throw in the towel.
