19:00 IST:
The Stage Is Set for the Next Showdown - That wraps up this Group C fixture, where West Indies collect the two points, while late entrants Scotland will have to wait a little longer for their first win of the tournament. Two matches are now done, but one big showdown is still to come, with co-hosts India beginning their World Cup campaign against USA at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. That one gets underway very soon, so switch tabs and stay with us for all the coverage from what promises to be a cracking contest. Cheers!
18:59 IST:
The victorious skipper of West Indies - Shai Hope is pleased with the team's winning start, acknowledging there's no margin for error in the tournament. He felt they could have scored a bit more at the halfway stage, considering the par score is around 190. Hope is happy with the team's performance, particularly Shimron Hetmyer, who's batting well and scoring runs. He shifted Hetmyer to number 3 to make the batting side more dangerous, given that the opponents have many left-arm bowlers. Hope is also delighted with Romario's milestones, saying it's great to see him perform and pick crucial wickets, including the hat-trick in T20Is.
18:57 IST:
The captain of Scotland - Richie Berrington is disappointed with Scotland's finish, despite being confident of chasing the target after the first innings, thanks to their batting depth. He believes the decision to bowl first was part of the team's strategy to be ready for both batting and bowling. Berrington praised the team's positive mindset and felt they bowled well initially, but Hetmyer's knock turned the game around. Losing key batters like Bruce and himself changed the momentum. Despite the loss, he sees many positives and feels the team gained valuable experience in the Eden Gardens conditions.

18:54 IST:
Shepherd Steals the Show - It was not a perfect bowling performance from West Indies, but they will happily take it in an opening game, even though there is room for improvement in the field. Many expected Akeal Hosein to take the new ball, but Rovman Powell went with an all-pace attack and it paid off as they struck three times in the Powerplay, including a stunning catch from Hetmyer. Motie was excellent through the middle overs, giving nothing away and picking up a wicket, while Holder finished with three. But it was Romario Shepherd who stole the show, producing a superb hat-trick and ending with a five-wicket haul that will be remembered for a long time.
18:47 IST:
Caribbean Batting Blitz Overwhelms Scotland - Earlier in the game, after a sluggish start from the West Indies openers, Shimron Hetmyer exploded alongside Rovman Powell, with the pair adding 81 off just 37 balls to seize control. Hetmyer finished with a scintillating 64 off 36, including a 22-ball half-century, the fastest by a West Indies batter in a T20 World Cup, while Sherfane Rutherford’s late hitting pushed the total to daunting heights. Scotland began well and closed strongly, but it was the middle overs where they lost their grip as the runs kept flowing. Currie was the pick of the bowlers, and debutant Oliver Davidson impressed with a wicket and an economical spell, but despite taking a scalp each, Safyaan Sharif and Michael Leask went for too many.
18:55 IST:
Scotland’s Middle-Order Meltdown - Scotland made a sedate start, and losing three wickets in the Powerplay immediately put them on the back foot. The 78-run stand between Richie Berrington and Tom Bruce dragged them back into the contest as they smashed 53 runs in 4 overs to swing the momentum, but once Berrington was dismissed, everything unraveled. They lost their composure, went searching for big hits, and a four-wicket over sealed their fate. From a promising 115/3, Scotland were bundled out for 147, a collapse that will sting for quite some time.
18:44 IST:
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Shimron Hetmyer is presented with the award for his knock of 64 off 36 and a stunning catch. He attributed his success to both an explosive batting performance and a brilliant catch, though he admitted the catch brought him more satisfaction due to his recent dedication to improving his fielding. While he does not consider it his absolute best, he ranks the grab high on his list of achievements. Adopting a forward-thinking mindset, Hetmyer remarked that everything happens for a reason, choosing to focus on future contributions. Whether setting or chasing totals, rather than dwelling on past misses. He expressed a preference for batting at number 3 in T20s, noting that the position offers him the freedom to attack early rather than managing the pressure of finishing. Despite jokingly suggesting his teammate Romario Shepherd deserved the award for his hat-trick and five-wicket haul, Hetmyer emphasized that the team's victory was the primary goal and reiterated their commitment to consistent execution in upcoming matches.
18:38 IST:
Men in Maroon start in style - West Indies kickstart their World Cup campaign with a fantastic win, and while the scorecard may suggest they were dominant, Scotland gave a strong account of themselves and fought hard. In the end, though, they were undone by Shimron Hetmyer’s brilliance with the bat and Romario Shepherd’s five-wicket haul, including a match-winning hat-trick that sealed the deal.
18:35 IST:
18.5: Jason Holder to Mark Watt, OUT! CAUGHT! And it is that man again, Romario Shepherd, with an outstanding catch. Slower one, around off, Mark Watt goes for a wild swing at it, gets it edged and the ball is flying to the left of the fielder at short third. Romario Shepherd glides to his left, puts in a dive and grabs hold of it. West Indies win by 35 runs.

WI vs SCO Live: Pace the way to go at Eden Gardens

From what we’ve seen so far, pace is clearly the preferred option under the lights in Kolkata. The bowlers who have mixed up their speeds have found immediate success, while spin has been taken apart throughout the night. With West Indies operating with four frontline pacers, supported by Rovman Powell as well, they appear well equipped to control the contest and potentially close this game out on their own terms.

Dicey powerplay start for Scots

The innings began with positive intent as George Munsey opened his account with a boundary. The early momentum was checked when Jason Holder struck, forcing Matthew Jones to pick out deep square leg. Munsey briefly lifted the tempo by launching the first six of the innings with a pull shot, but the pressure told soon after. Brandon McMullen failed to execute a scoop and was dismissed, before a sharp piece of fielding from Shimron Hetmyer ended Munsey’s stay with a superb catch.

That brings Tom Bruce into focus. His numbers against the West Indies aren’t flattering — just 28 runs in three outings — but with wickets down early, his team will be counting on him to provide some much-needed solidity.

A splendid take from Shimron Hetmyer in the deep, and every Windies player goes up to celebrate with him. It is also time for Drinks now. Scotland are in early trouble, losing 3 wickets inside the Powerplay, and not a lot on the board. Windies also got to a similar start, but they did not lose any wickets in the first six overs. The Scottish need a rebuild, but they also cannot take too much time, as the asking rate will only go up. West Indies do not need to do anything different, they just need to continue as this and opportunities will arrive for them as the pressure is on the batters. Also, Tom Bruce is the next man in.

5.4: Shamar Joseph to George Munsey, OUT! Spectacular catch! An early contender for catch of the tournament from Shimron Hetmyer. Short and around middle and leg, George Munsey initially gestures like ducking down on this but ends up pulling this flat-batted towards the right of Shimron Hetmyer at the deep backward square leg region. Shimron moves to his right and, with the ball going away from him, puts in the dive and ends up grabbing a one-handed stunner to send George Munsey back.

Scotland being exposed?

It wasn’t the greatest delivery by any stretch, but Romario Shepherd won’t mind the result as he picks up a valuable wicket. Brandon McMullen never really got hold of the scoop attempt — the opportunity was there, but the execution fell short. ... The Run Chase ...
16:52 IST:
Up for a quick chat - Shimron Hetmyer says the outing was a mix of good and bad. The good was being out in the middle and contributing, while the bad was just how hot it was out there. He jokes that it seemed like he was the only one really feeling the heat, adding that he even asked the umpires, who told him they did not feel it as much. He says the key for him is batting with a clear mind and being ready to cash in whenever the ball is there to be hit. He adds that everyone knows that the West Indies are a strong boundary-hitting side, but where they can fall short at times is in managing singles and dot balls, and that is something they are keen to improve by limiting the number of dots.
16:55 IST:
Hetmyer's swashbuckling knock - Hetmyer was at his brutal best, racing to a 22-ball fifty and setting a new record as the fastest West Indian to reach the mark in a T20 World Cup. Powell eventually fell when Currie snapped the partnership, but by then the rescue job was done and the stage was set perfectly for a big finish. Sherfane Rutherford came out swinging and through his cameo of 26 runs, he ensured that the scoring never dipped. Scotland couldn't string wickets regularly in that middle phase and their bowlers were taken apart. Brad Currie was the only one with an economy of under 6. It would require a strong start for Scotland to scale down this target against a West Indian bowling attack that has quality aplenty. Should be an interesting chase ahead. Stay tuned.
16:45 IST:
A solid resurrection in the middle overs - Shimron Hetmyer may have touched down in India late, but he made sure no one missed his arrival. Walking in with West Indies wobbling, he joined forces with Rovman Powell and completely changed the tone of the innings. Their counterpunching stand of 81 dragged the Men in Maroon out of trouble and turned the middle overs into a scoring spree, with 105 runs hammered between overs 7 and 15.
16:48 IST:
A cagey start, no freebies early - Scotland showed a lot of discipline with the new ball and didn't allow any sort of freedom for the West Indian openers to tee off from the outset. Hope and King played a few ambitious strokes, but were rather watchful in the Powerplay. Scots didn't get any wickets during the field restrictions as West Indies crawled to 33/0 in the first six. In an attempt to accelerate, both the openers were dismissed in quick time, which pushed West Indies for another rebuild with 66/2 on the board at halfway.
16:41 IST:
A strong finish in the end - West Indies were barely ticking at a run a ball through the first half, but the backend told a very different story as they blasted 116 runs in the last ten overs. Scotland did claw back a bit of control at the death, conceding just 15 runs across the last two, but the damage had already been done. From a sluggish start to a commanding finish, West Indies still ended up with a hefty total on the board and would be the happier of the two sides walking back in the dugout.

T20 World Cup Live: INNINGS BREAK

It was a topsy-turvy start for the West Indies, especially after the confidence with which they opened the game. Momentum slipped early, but Shimron Hetmyer played a crucial role in steadying the innings and leading the fightback once the powerplay ended. With a total in excess of 180 on the board, the responsibility now shifts firmly to the bowlers, who will be aiming to deliver the ideal start in the second innings and put the opposition under immediate pressure.

16:38 IST:
19.5: Brad Currie to Romario Shepherd, SIX! One hand comes off the handle, but it does not matter. Romario Shepherd's power takes it over the ropes. Cross-seam delivery, Currie goes searching for the yorker. It comes out as a low full toss, on off. Romario swings through the line. The ball catches the toe end of the blade but it clears the straight boundary. The long on and long off fielders got around but only watched it sailed over the fence.

T20 World Cup Live: WI getting punished for slow approach

West Indies’ “keep it calm” approach has backfired early. Brandon King becomes the second opener to fall, and it’s starting to feel like playing too safe is doing more damage than good.

Both wickets have come with the same shadow: waiting too long, searching for gaps instead of going big. Now it’s on Shimron Hetmyer and the middle order to change the tempo before Scotland tighten the squeeze.

DRINKS BREAK. Scotland have displayed a lot of discipline with the ball so far. However, they are still searching for their first breakthrough. Hope and King haven't been flashy and have respected the good balls, but they haven't gotten the desired start they would have hoped for. There are no such demons on the pitch, just a slight hold on it, nothing else. WI vs SCO Live: West Indies off to a brisk start

West Indies have started with real intent here. Brandon King and Shai Hope are doing the classic T20 opener’s job: a boundary when it’s there, singles when it’s not, and zero panic.

Scotland haven’t handed out freebies, but they also haven’t found that big “moment” ball yet. And with this Windies batting line-up, they know one early wicket could be the difference before the gears properly shift into overdrive.
