Chamari Athapaththu brings herself into the attack, but Shafali Verma shows absolutely no mercy. The assault continues as she creams another one through the covers, the boundaries coming thick and fast.
Athapaththu can only shake her head in disappointment. She tries to change things up by coming around the wicket, but Shafali calmly knocks a single to rotate strike and keep the pressure firmly on Sri Lanka.

Jemimah Rodrigues gets going, and she does it in her own style. Kavisha Dilhari tosses one up just a fraction short and Jemimah waits on it, carving her trademark cut behind square. It whistles past the infield and races away to the fence — a classy first boundary.
Dilhari tightens up after that, pulling the length back and keeping a slip in place. Jemimah nudges a single into the leg side, and Shafali briefly steps out to a shortened delivery to pick up another run. Malki Madara continues through the Powerplay, but things start to unravel quickly. Smriti Mandhana keeps nudging the ball around for singles and doubles, staying busy at the crease.
Then comes the slip-up — Madara oversteps, the siren blares for a no-ball, and the pressure mounts. It gets worse with a wide, followed by another one sprayed well outside off. Cue another free hit, and Mandhana makes Sri Lanka pay in style. She absolutely creams a slot delivery through deep square leg, timing it to perfection. That one’s straight into the highlights package.
A long over, nine balls bowled, and 13 valuable runs added as India continue to build momentum.

Apart from Chamari Athapaththu, who played with intent, the Sri Lankan batters struggled to get going. Sneh Rana was the standout performer, while Shree Charani and Vaishnavi Sharma chipped in with two wickets apiece.
Vaishnavi enjoyed a memorable day, finishing with impressive figures of 4-0-32-2.

They’ve lost Harshitha Samarawickrama through a run out at a crucial stage.
It all started with a full delivery outside off from Charani, which she whipped through forward square leg. Samarawickrama and Dilhari attempted a risky second run, but the throw came in to the keeper.
The bails were dislodged and the decision went upstairs. Harshitha went full stretch with a dive, but the bat’s spine touched the ground while the face was up, which appears to have caused the bat to lift. Not what Sri Lanka needed — they’ve lost their set batter at a pivotal moment.
Harshita scored 33 off 32 with the help of four fours. Nilakshi de Silva is the new batter.

Deepti Sharma was unavailable due to illness, Harmanpreet Kaur confirmed after India won the toss and opted to field first. Bowling all-rounder Sneh Rana was named as her replacement in the playing XI.
Sri Lanka endured a forgettable outing in the series opener, losing momentum early and never recovering after Chamari Athapaththu’s dismissal. A cautious Powerplay, highlighted by a maiden conceded to Deepti Sharma, set the tone for an underwhelming batting display.

Ahead of the second T20I, one player brimming with confidence is Deepti Sharma. Earlier today, she rose to the No.1 spot in the ICC Women’s T20I bowling rankings, a reward for her typically economical spell in the series opener.
Deepti returned figures of 1 for 20 from four overs, a performance that fetched her five rating points and propelled her past Australia’s Annabel Sutherland, who had occupied the top position since August.
Deepti now sits atop the T20I bowling charts, leading by the slimmest of margins — just one rating point.
