ENG vs IND, 1st Test Day 2 Highlights: England (209/3) trail by 262, snatch dominance away from India

India were flying in the morning, with vice-captain Rishabh Pant smashing a sensational century and Shubman Gill joining the fun. At 430/3, fans were dreaming of 550+. But hold on… enter the England fightback! A lower-order meltdown saw India crash to 471 all out — from 430/3 to 471/10. Ouch.

Rain tried to gatecrash the action, but it cleared up in time for Jasprit Bumrah to serve an early reminder — sending Zak Crawley back for a duck in the very first over. Classic Bumrah vibes.

But then... Duckett and Pope had other ideas. The duo weathered the storm (literally and figuratively), survived dropped catches, edges, and close calls to stitch a 122-run partnership that sucked the momentum right out of India.

Just when things looked flat for the visitors, who else but Bumrah to charge back in! He cleaned up Duckett and even got the big fish, Joe Root — all three wickets for India on Day 2 belong to one man.

Still, Ollie Pope is standing tall and has Harry Brook for company. England end Day 2 on top, and India have a mountain of work to do on Day 3 — starting with finding a second bowler who’s not named Jasprit Bumrah!

Jasprit Bumrah is in for the final over of the day. Brook does not seem too fazed here as Bumrah keeps hitting the outside off-stump line. The bowler gives away a no-ball as well. Brook remains watchful here as Bumrah goes for a slower ball. Umpire once again signals for the no-ball here. 

Bumrah goes short here and Brook gets the top-edge and finds the fielder here. Siraj takes the catch but oh wait! Umpire signals yet another no ball here. Utter disappointment for the Indain camp. 

Bumrah shows his aggression and goes full with the yorker. The last ball of the day and Bumrah leaves Brook bamboozled. Short and goes just past Brook's head despite making a slight jump.

Jadeja is in for what could be the penultimate over of the day. Comes over the wicket against Pope and gets it on the pads. Appeals but is denied by the umpire. Looked to be pitching easily outside the leg side.

There it is and once again it is Bumrah who brings in the breakthrough. Root misjudges the bounce and gets the edges which carries on to the man at first-slip who makes no mistakes with the catch.

Interesting change here as Jasprit Bumrah comes into the attack in place of Shardul Thakur who has been leaking way too many runs. He starts off with the length delivery on the third or fourth stump line on the off-side. Root just touches and goes for the single. Pope is on 99 and is up against Bumrah. Perhaps the yorker that got him out before? 

Length delivery here but too wide on the off-side here. Gets the inside edge here but misses the stumps. Pope gets the single and the crowds are up applauding the batter here for his brilliant display.

Ravindra Jadeja continues his spell. Looks to waste some time here with the field changes here. Four runs from the over and all eyes will be on Pope as he eyes his century.

Change of ends for Shardul Thakur but no change in the outcome as Pope slaps the delivery wide on the off-stump straight to the boundary by the deep point region to start things off. Follows it up with another as Thakur errs in his line and Pope flicks it away to the fine-leg region. Umpire calls it leg-byes here. Another no-ball here. Expensive start by Thakur here and he is not doing himself any favours. England bring up 200 runs on the scoreboard in fairly quick time.

Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack. Just like that he gets the over done with. Just the two runs from the over here as Pope his slowly trickling his way for the hundred.

Prasidh here looks to go short and Pope plays a rather bizarre shot. Went down on his knees as he looked to play the uppercut. Ended up missing the ball altogether and Prasidh has a word with the batter. 

Pope however, responds fiercely as he pulls one over the deep fine-leg region to get the boundary here.

Thakur continues his spell, and he starts off with a few length deliveries. He goes up and appeals for a delivery that Root middle with the bat. A bizarre appeal indeed. 

However, Root follows it up with the late cut to the third-slip region and gets the boundary. This also brings up the 50 partnership between these two as well. 

Thakur oversteps the final delivery. Root guides the final ball for the single at the point region.

Pope continues marching into the 80s as he cuts the short delivery by Prasidh Krishna on the back foot to get the ball racing past the slip region for four runs

Finally, after 39 overs, Shardul Thakur comes into the attack for the Indian team. He starts of with a few short of length deliveries just outside the off-stump line to warm up here. Seems to be slightly pushing his length fuller, though. Pope finishes the over off with a wonderful drive to the deep point region. Jadeja is there and interestingly does not put in the dive to stop the ball. Looks to use his foot to block the ball but ends up missing out altogether.

 The former India Head Coach, Ravi Shastri commented on how Bumrah weaves his magic with the ball. He talked about how Bumrah makes use of subtle variations in terms of his angles.

“When he is on a roll, I love the way Bumrah sets up a batter - the use of the crease, the angles he creates," Shastri commented on Sky Sports. 

“You can just see from his body language that he is enjoying this spell and there is a chance of an opportunity being created," he added.

However, he remains wary of how much Bumrah can be used due to his injury concerns. 

"When he is up against a top-class batter like Root, there is a spring in his step. But India will have to use him in short bursts."

Brief delay here in the second delivery as Siraj messes up his run-up. Goes back and starts over again. But not much luck here. Swing seems to have died down for the moment. India will be hoping for the conditions to be overcast again. 

Meanwhile, Root does not seem to be bothered by the full deliveries that are coming at him. Continues to push it down to the mid-wicket region here.

A lot of missed opportunities for the visitors and Shubman Gill's message should be to ensure that this does not happen going into the final stretch of the day's play. Had they taken those chances they would have made their lives so much easier. Looks like Siraj will continue with his spell.

Pope just tapped the final delivery to the covers and pushed for the quick single. Sai Sudharsan looked to make something of nothing there and threw it to the striker's end. Ends up missing the wicket and goes on as the batters sneak in one more run. The fielding today by the Indian team leaves a lot to be desired. It could be costly in the long run for the visitors.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain tells Sky Sports that Shubman Gill faces a tough risk-reward challenge as captain at Headingley, where keeping catchers in often comes at the cost of leaking boundaries.

"That is the challenge for Shubman Gil, especially here at Headingley. It is risk-reward.

"You have to keep your catchers in but you realise you are going to go for boundaries. It is such a hard place to captain for that reason."

The ball was just kissing the bails — millimetres away from a breakthrough. Siraj can’t hide his disappointment. That was oh-so-close!

Ravindra Jadeja — usually as safe as houses — drops a sitter at backward point!

Ben Duckett, on 15, gets a huge let-off and Jasprit Bumrah is made to wait a little longer for his second.

Of all people, it’s Jaddu who lets it slip! Bumrah can only flash a smile — the kind that says, “Really?”

India captain Shubman Gill has reinforced the slip cordon for Ben Duckett as Jasprit Bumrah is in the middle of a great spell. The India speedster has gone around the wicket, trying to bring the ball back into him. 

Chaos in the middle! 

A length ball angling fropm Siraj into the pads clips Pope and rolls to Pant’s left. Duckett was already halfway down the pitch looking for a single, but Pope sent him back just in time. Pant fired a return throw at the striker’s end, forcing Pope to dive back into his crease.

A huge mix-up, but both batters survive! Tension clearly building among the English pair as nerves start to show.

England have been very lucky early into this innings, and that is despite the wicket of Zak Crawley.

Both Pope and Duckett edge Bumrah's delivery, but both times the ball sneaked between the slips to the boundary. 

Shubman Gill will want his side to avoid leaking out these runs.

While Jasprit Bumrah has been keeping the England batters under pressure, the same batters are easing themselves out by gobbling up runs against Mohammed Siraj. 

The India pacer leaks 19 runs in his first two overs, which is somewhat hampering the pressure created by Bumrah early in this innings.

The rain has finally stopped, the covers are off, and the Indian fielders are already in position. England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, who had to walk back earlier due to the drizzle, are set to return to the crease.

India’s top order dazzled, taking the score to 430/3 and setting up hopes of a huge total. But a dramatic collapse followed, with the last seven wickets falling for just 41 runs—ending the innings at 471.

It’s now the highest score a team has had at 3 down before being bowled out without reaching 500. The last time something similar happened? England in the 1948 Ashes at Headingley, going from 426/3 to 496 all out.

With rain getting heavier, fans now fear the collapse could prove costly in a match that’s starting to look headed for a draw.

Confusion at the Headingley crease!

The Indian fielders took their positions and even the England openers, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, were ready to walk out. But just then, the umpires signaled for the covers to come back on as the drizzle persisted.

We’re now set for what looks like a slight delay.

This isn’t good news for the start of the second innings.

Prasidh Krishna dismissed by Joh Tongue! 

India restricted on 471 after some brilliant but late comeback show from the England bowlers. 

4 for Ben Stokes and 4 for Josh Tongue - gives the hosts some respite after two days of onslaught from the India batters. 

Three centurions - Yashasvi Jaiswal (101), captain Shubman Gill (147), and Rishabh Pant (134) have given this new Test era for India a bright start. 

It is now time for the India bowling unit to compliment their batters - and Jasprit Bumrah will be eager to come back on the field as soon as possible.

This is not good news from Headingley!!

The pitch cover has come on and the Headingley pitch is now being covered, but so far it just looks like a precautionary measure from the ground staff during this lunch break. 

No rain at the moment, but better safe than sorry.

"What do you say about Pant?!

"I used the word outrageous yesterday and nothing has changed.

"He plays the numbers game beautifully and plays the way he wants.

"He will block for a bit and then decides he has to go after the bowler and shift gears. He has his own computer and only he knows how it works.

"That's his USP. That's what puts bowlers under pressure and makes him box office, a real entertainer and a match winner."

It has been a superb game of cricket so far. The morning session of Day 2 started with some incredible fireworks with the bat from Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant.

Pant reached his hundred with a six off Shoaib Bashir, but right after that the spinner managed to trap Shubman Gill at deep square leg.

This is when the game changed for England. They saw an inroad and became sharper. Ollie Pope picked up an incredible catch at cover and then two more wickets fell in the Pant and Shardul.

Ben Stokes has been the hero of England here, with 4 wickets to his name already.

The overhead conditions have changed and the clouds are making their effects felt.

India have 450+ runs on the bank, a figure that the coach and captain will be very happy about.

India might look to declare after one more wicket to make best use of the conditions in Leeds.

England have clawed back in the game!

Ben Stokes picks up his fourth wicket as England dismiss Shardul Thakur at the stroke of lunch.

108.4: Ben Stokes to Shardul Thakur, OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Ben Stokes with a wicket right on the stroke of Lunch once again and India are going down in a hurry. Just full of a length from Stokes, wide outside off. Shardul Thakur again just extends his arms in hopes of a cover drive without moving his feet and ends up getting a thick outside edge through to the keeper. Jamie Smith gobbles it up to his left and Thakur walks back for 1 (8) as India are 454/7 at LUNCH ON DAY 2!

Wickets are tumbling now.

Rishabh Pant gets pinned in front of the stumps by Joshua Tongue in the 108th over of the match.

The overcast conditions are really having their effect here. The ball is seaming around, and that means the bowlers are gaining their confidence back in this pitch.

107.2: Josh Tongue to Rishabh Pant, OUT! LBW! Tongue stays around the wicket and hones in on that good length again, but this time, he bowls it outside off and gets the ball to jag back in sharply. Pant hops across and tries to leave but the ball pings him on the pads. There is a  huge appeal, and given! A big miscalculation from Rishabh Pant and that could be catastrophic. Pant has a long chat with Ravindra Jadeja and does review it, he simply has to review it. There is only one man on the leg side, at deep square leg and Gill is targetting deep mid-wicket but because he is not to the pitch of the ball, he ends up hitting it a lot squarer and finds Josh Tongue at perfection near the square leg ropes. He did not have to move an inch.
