A fresh weather system is steering its way towards the northern peaks of India, bringing a much-needed dusting of white to the high altitudes.

While the heart of the country basks in a dry spell that is expected to last for the next seven days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has flagged a shift in the atmosphere over the Western Himalayan region.

A Western Disturbance, currently moving as a trough in the upper atmosphere, is set to cross into the region on February 9, 2026.

WHERE WILL IT SNOW TOMORROW?

Travel plans to the mountains may require an extra layer of woollen clothes as the new weather system takes hold. Isolated to scattered rainfall or snowfall is likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad starting February 9.

HOW HOT OR COLD WILL IT BE IN NORTH INDIA THIS WEEK?

While the mountains brace for snow, the plains are shaking off the deepest chills. Minimum temperatures across Northwest India are expected to climb gradually by about two degrees Celsius over the next two days.

This warm-up follows a freezing night where Fatehpur in East Rajasthan recorded the lowest temperature in the plains at 4.9 degrees Celsius.

Central India will also see a rise of two to four degrees Celsius in the coming days, while Delhi and the National Capital Region remain steady with maximum temperatures hovering between 23 and 26 degrees Celsius.

IS THE DENSE FOG GOING TO CLEAR SOON?

Commuters in the north still face a hazy battle on the roads. Dense to very dense fog is forecast to persist during the morning and night hours in isolated pockets of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand until February 10. Visibility has already hit zero metres in Bareilly and Gorakhpur, making driving conditions treacherous.

Beyond the north, northern Tamil Nadu, Bihar, and parts of Northeast India are also likely to experience foggy mornings through February 9.
