Gang rape horror: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant's remarks spark row

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who has drawn criticism over his remark about the gang-rape of two girls, on Friday said his statement was taken out of context and added that the safety of minors has to be a “shared responsibility”.

He also said that he was deeply pained by the incident and would ensure that the accused in the case get the “most stringent punishment under the law”.

Meanwhile, with Goa assembly elections next year, a political row has erupted over Pramod Sawant's statement.

Goa Forward Party MLA Vijai Sardesai said the safety of citizens is the responsibility of police and government. "If they can't provide it to us, the CM has no right to sit in the post," he said.
