Tamil Nadu government's bill against Hindi; Sixth arrest in Durgapur rape case

The M.K. Stalin-led DMK government in Tamil Nadu is reportedly considering a bill to ban Hindi movies, songs, and hoardings across the state, sources said. The move marks a sharp escalation in Tamil Nadu’s decades-long resistance to “Hindi imposition.” Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has often asserted that “only if a language survives, the race will survive.” The proposal, discussed in an emergency meeting, could soon be tabled in the Assembly.

The West Bengal Police on Tuesday arrested Wasif Ali, the classmate of a medical student, for allegedly raping her in a forested area of Durgapur. According to the survivor’s complaint, the incident occurred when she went out for dinner with Ali, who later assaulted her. Police identified him as the prime accused and took him into custody following the investigation.
