Many in Afghanistan remain skeptical even as the Taliban vowed to respect women's rights but within Islamic law. From 1997 to 2001, when the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, they imposed strict rules for women based on the group's interpretation of the Sharia law. They banned women from attending schools, colleges and working or participating in any political events. Back then, women were not allowed to go out of their home without being accompanied by a male member of the family.

After the Taliban seized Afghanistan with the collapse of the government as President Ashraf Ghani fled the country, the women fear the return of stringent restrictions imposed against them.
