Is social media responsible for lynch mob terror?

There seems to be no end to incidents of mob lynching in our country. A bloodthirsty mob killed five people in Dhule in Maharashtra as they were suspected by the mob to be child traffickers.

Such rumours of 'suspected child traffickers' are aplenty on the social media and messages on social media play active part in spreading such rumours. Is the very social media, initially meant to connect us, turning us into mindless killers?
