Former Chief Minister of Karnataka HD Kumaraswamy has sided with Kiccha Sudeep and asserted that Hindi is not the national language. He has slammed actor Ajay Devgn for claiming that Hindi is the national language of India and accused the actor of acting as the BJP's mouthpiece for Hindi nationalism.

The controversy started when Kiccha Sudeep said in an interview that “Hindi is no more a national language.” After this, Ajay Devgn tweeted that "Hindi was, is and always will be our mother tongue and national language."
