Darren Lehmann steps down as coach following Steve Smith's emotional presser

Darren Lehmann has resigned as Australia coach following the ball-tampering scandal that erupted in Cape Town.

An investigation by Cricket Australia found only three players - Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft - guilty in the cheating scandal in the Cape Town Test against South Africa. Lehmann was given a clean chit by the investigators and that raised a few eyebrows around the cricket world.

Several former cricketers from around the world wondered how the coach could not be aware of a conspiracy to tamper with the ball. Immediately after the scandal broke, Smith owned up to cheating and said the leadership group was aware. However, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood distanced themselves from Smith's comments.

Lehmann said he had taken the call to step down after watching Smith and Bancroft speak to the media. This decision comes shortly after Smith's tearful press conference in Sydney
