Several migrant labourers, who went back to their native places amid coronavirus lockdown, are returning back to the cities in Maharashtra including Pune and Mumbai ever since Unlock 1.0 began on June 1.
Data with the Maharashtra government shows that around 1 million migrant labourers left the state in April and May. Around 300,000 have returned so far since Unlock 1.0 began on June 1. The 11 trains coming to Mumbai everyday from states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand have registered 100 per cent occupancy since then.
The lack of jobs at their native places have forced the migrant workers to return. As migrant labourers return back to cities, will they get a new deal now? Will the construction companies who employ them will now offer them a new deal or benefits?
