India's Omicron variant cases count today crossed the 100 mark after recording the highest single day rise of 24 fresh cases of the new variant. Meanwhile, Centre has advised people to avoid non-essential travel and mass gatherings and keep New Year celebrations at low intensity.

Omicron is already driving a new covid wave in many parts of the world. Britain recorded another record 88,376 new confirmed cases on Thursday, almost 10,000 more than the previous record set a day earlier. In Scotland, Omicron has become the dominant variant, and is responsible for more than half the cases there.
