In Depth: Slowdown grips auto sector

Sales in the auto sector have fallen in 12 of the 13 months since July 2018 signalling a sharp slowdown in the sector. Around two lakh jobs have been cut across automobile dealerships in India in the last three months as vehicle retailers take the last resort of cutting manpower to tide over the impact of the unprecedented sales slump, according to industry body FADA.

The government will lift a ban that forbade government departments from buying new vehicles, even to replace old ones, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said as she announced a slew of measures to boost demand for the auto sector.
