J&K civic polls: Separatist leaders under house arrest

Separatist leaders in the Valley have been put under house arrest. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Shah Gilani are under house arrest from Sunday evening. Yaseen Malik, Hilal War and other separatist leaders have also been detained by the police.

Elections are being held for 422 wards of 30 municipal bodies spread across 12 districts of the state. As many as 1,283 candidates belonging to different political parties and independents are in the fray for the first phase. 78 contestants have already been declared elected unopposed.
