Suriya's Mounam Pesiyadhe to re-release in theatres after 24 years

After 24 years, Suriya’s much-acclaimed romantic drama Mounam Pesiyadhe is set to return to the big screen. The film will be re-released in theatres on February 13, perfectly timed with Valentine’s Day week, giving audiences a chance to revisit one of Tamil cinema’s most tender love stories on the big screen.

Released in 2002, Mounam Pesiyadhe was written and directed by Ameer in his directorial debut. The film marked Trisha’s debut as a female lead and was also among the early collaborations between Suriya and composer Yuvan Shankar Raja. Nandaa and Neha Pendse were also newcomers at the time, while Laila appeared in a cameo role.

Ahead of the re-release, Suriya shared a video message reflecting on the film’s lasting impact. Speaking about how perceptions of love have changed, the actor said that he often comes across dialogues from the film circulating as WhatsApp statuses and short reels. He described Mounam Pesiyadhe as one of his favourite films, praising Ameer’s debut direction and recalling how the film featured three lead actors but remained a pure love story without exaggerated romantic tropes.

Suriya also highlighted Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music, calling it one of his favourite albums, and said an entire generation missed watching the film in theatres. Expressing excitement about the re-release, he added that he was looking forward to watching it with audiences again and hoped to see them at least at one show, calling it a “nice, sweet watch”.

The film followed the story of a stoic man and his tryst with love, steering clear of overt romance and focusing instead on emotional restraint and silence. Actor Vidharth was also seen in one of his early screen appearances. Mounam Pesiyadhe was both a critical and commercial success upon release, with Yuvan’s music receiving widespread acclaim. Songs from the film continue to enjoy enduring popularity even today.

Following the film, Suriya and Trisha went on to collaborate on Aayutha Ezhuthu (2004) and Aaru (2005). After over two decades, the duo will reunite once again in RJ Balaji’s much-anticipated film Karuppu, which is currently awaiting its release date.
