Actor Mahesh Babu opened up about his first meeting with filmmaker SS Rajamouli, recalling how hearing the narration of the upcoming film Varanasi left him both excited and nervous before he eventually eased into the process.

In a post shared by the film’s official X page, Mahesh Babu recalled the day when the film was offered to him. “I went to SSR’s office and heard the narration, and it blew my mind. I was really excited. I remember going home and talking to my wife; it was intimidating. I love the way he presents his heroes and the kind of film he was attempting, and I was a bit nervous. But the more I met him, he eased me into the process, and now I’m really enjoying myself.”

In the same post, Rajamouli revealed that about “25 minutes of the film is set in the mythological period.”

The film, also starring Priyanka Chopra in a key role has been locked for release on April 7, 2027.

During the film's title glimpse event in November 2025, SS Rajamouli explained that he had filmed an important Ramayana episode in Varanasi, which is set in Kasi.

The film's Letterboxd synopsis hints at a possible storyline. It reads, "When an asteroid hits the city of Varanasi in India, what are the events that it leads to? Is the world about to be doomed? Does it need a saviour who has to traverse across the continents and timelines to influence the most crucial moment in the history of Earth?"

Varanasi is tipped to be made on a humongous budget of over Rs 1,000 crore.
