Mamata Banerjee leads massive protest against SIR exercise in Bengal

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday led a massive protest march against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Kolkata. The Trinamool Congress, led by Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, alleged that the SIR is a 'backdoor NRC' by the central government aimed at disenfranchising genuine voters, particularly minorities. In response, the BJP said that the exercise is necessary to remove crores of 'bogus voters' and illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators from the electoral lists
