Man living in Bengal cremation ground killed, accused wanted to eat his flesh

According to investigators, after killing the man, the accused allegedly carried the body to a nearby water tap, washed it, and later concealed it with the intention of consuming parts of the flesh.

Police are continuing the investigation to verify the sequence of events and determine whether the accused was involved in similar incidents earlier.

Sometimes, more than the murder, the intention behind the murder is more shocking. In a similar case of murder in West Bengal’s Dinhati, the revelation of the intentions for the murder turned out to be more alarming for the local police. Police linked the murder case to cannibalism after the arrest of the accused, triggering panic and disbelief among residents.

The incident occurred at Thoraikhana village in Dinhata. On Saturday, a village fair was being held nearby, keeping most residents engaged. A cremation ground located some distance from the village had been serving as the shelter for a man who moved around the area for nearly a year.

Late in the afternoon, villagers discovered the man’s beheaded body lying beside a pond and immediately raised an alarm.

Upon receiving the information, SDPO Dhiman Mitra, together with senior police officers rushed to the spot. The post-mortem examination later confirmed deep cut marks on the back of the victim’s neck.

With no CCTV cameras installed in the remote locality, the motive behind the killing initially remained unclear. Police then activated their local informant network and learned that a witness had allegedly seen Ferdous Alam washing the body at the pond. Acting on this tip-off, the suspect was detained.

“Though the accused had undergone multiple rounds of rehab, no previous criminal cases had been registered against him. We are stunned by this rare incident of cannibalism. Interrogation is ongoing to determine the full motive and background," a senior police officer said.
