As the Constitution bench of the Supreme Court is all set to hear the triple talaq case on Thursday, Muslim women in Varanasi sought divine help by performing prayers at the famous Sankatmochan temple. Activists of the Muslim Mahila Foundation recited the Hanuman Chalisa a 100 times, seeking the blessings of Lord Hanuman.
Â
Meanwhile, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board has claimed it has garnered over 5 crore signatures against interference in Muslim personal law.
Â
From tomorrow, the Supreme Court will hear a clutch of petitions on the issue, which is at the centre of a tussle between orthodoxy and reform in the Muslim community: the former upholding its validity under the Shariat and the latter saying that it is regressive, anti- women and had no place in Islam.
Â
The apex court will also hear pleas challenging the validity of polygamy and nikah halala under which a divorced Muslim woman has to marry again, consummate the marriage, and then break it if she wants to go back to her first husband.
