Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee injured his hand after smashing a glass water bottle as the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting on the Waqf Bill turned ugly on Tuesday. Sources said the incident took place during a heated argument between BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay and Kalyan Banerjee.Â
Sources stated that the heated exchange occurred during a presentation on Odisha, attended by retired judges, senior advocates, and intellectuals. TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee, who had already spoken multiple times, attempted to raise a point out of turn, prompting objections from BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay, sources said.
As tensions escalated, Banerjee allegedly used unparliamentary language, which Gangopadhyay responded to, leading to a verbal spat between the two MPs. According to sources, the confrontation intensified when Banerjee slammed a glass bottle on the table, injuring himself in the process.
