Madhya Pradesh doctor arrested after 10 children die from toxic syrup
Following the deaths of 10 children in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, a doctor who prescribed a cough syrup has been arrested. Dr. Praveen Soni was arrested late Saturday night after an FIR was filed against him and the manufacturer, Shreesan Pharmaceuticals. The action comes after a report found the 'cold rift' cough syrup contained a toxic chemical. The report stated the syrup contained "48.6-diethylene glycol, which could cause serious health problems." An FIR was registered under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and the BNS based on a complaint from a local BMO. Dr. Soni, a government doctor, allegedly prescribed the syrup to most of the deceased children at his private clinic. The Madhya Pradesh government has since banned all products from the pharmaceutical company across the state.
