Karva Chauth celebrations: Is it regressive or women exercising their rights?

Women in many parts of the country today observed Karva Chauth for the long lives of their husbands.  

This ritual is ages old, but of late a debate has started whether this ritual is well past its sell-by date and why should only women fast for the long life of their husbands?
