Gujarat HC refuses to grant interim relief to Rahul Gandhi in defamation case

The Gujarat High Court refused to grant interim relief to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's plea seeking a stay on his conviction in a criminal defamation case over his "Modi surname" remark. The court has reserved its order and will give a verdict after the summer vacation.

A Surat court had on March 23 sentenced Gandhi, who represented Wayanad parliamentary constituency in Kerala, to two years in jail after convicting him under sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code for criminal defamation in the case filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Purnesh Modi.
