Cuttack violence: Clashes during Durga idol immersion lead to curfew, internet ban

Cuttack remains on edge following violent clashes during a Durga idol immersion procession on Saturday. The incident, which reportedly began over objections to high-decibel music, led to stone and bottle pelting, injuring 25 people, including eight police officers. In response, authorities have imposed a 36-hour curfew and a 24-hour social media ban, with internet services also suspended. Police have conducted flag marches to restore normalcy and arrested several individuals. One speaker stated, “The criminal mindset of the uncivilized people who have committed such crimes, six of them have been arrested.” While Orissa Chief Minister Mohan Manji has condemned the incident and vowed strict action, the opposition has criticised the state government for failing to maintain law and order. The VHP has called for a 12-hour ban, citing administrative lapses.
