Centre assigns officer to look into deepfake content on social media platforms

The government will assign a special officer to look into the deepfake menace on online platforms and also to assist citizens in filing FIRs as and when they spot fake content online, Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Friday.

This comes after the internet witnessed a surge in deepfake videos (a technological phenomenon that blurs the line between reality and fiction). A string of deepfake videos of Bollywood actors including Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif and Kajol went viral online over the last month, which raised serious concerns.
